Developing capacity for effective forest management

Developing capacity for effective forest management is expected to help achieve better results in the three focus areas.

With regards to illegal logging this means building capacity for certification, chain of custody, sustainable forest management on the ground as well as on the policy level. In the fight against unwanted vegetation fires this includes institutional strengthening, better dissemination of data and information on fire prevention and building public awareness. In reforestation and rehabilitation of degraded lands this means taking stock of existing institutional capacity and strengthening these. One means to do this is by improving links between institutions.

Various institutions including donor agencies, universities, research institutes and extension centers in this region have developed training resources under their respective programs. It would be beneficial for all parties involved to know which institution has developed what kind of resources. This would allow a more efficient use of existing training resources and at the same time avoid duplication.

In a first step the AFP aims at compiling a detailed database of information on existing training resources and courses available region-wide. This database would also provide practical information such as cost and available accommodation. This on-line database is anticipated to promote effective cooperation among partners in training and capacity building. In a next step institutions offering training could collaborate on developing a framework to cross-utilize existing training resources and to collaboratively develop new training resources where needed.
