The Asia Forest Partnership

AFP

Collaborating for the sustainable management
of Asia's forests

Introducing the AFP

The Asia Forest Partnership (AFP) is a voluntary, multi-stakeholder collaboration of governments, intergovernmental and civil society groups promoting sustainable forest management in Asia.

From Rio to the AFP

The AFP was launched at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. It is one of over 200 partnerships registered with the United Nations Division for Sustainable Development. The common aim of these partnerships is the implementation of sustainable development based on the 1992 Rio Earth Summit Declaration and UN's Millennium Development Goals. Partnerships do not substitute for but complement intergovernmental commitments. The AFP's first phase extends until 2007.

AFP's Focus Areas

The AFP promotes sustainable forest management in Asia by focusing on three critical issues:

  • Combating illegal logging
  • Control of forest fires
  • Rehabilitation and reforestation of degraded lands

The partnership also works on building capacity, good governance and better forest law enforcement for effective forest management. Work in these underlying and cross cutting issues will help achieve better results in the three focus areas.

AFP - A Unique Approach

The partnership acts as a catalyst for already existing initiatives by increasing synergies and reducing duplication between programs and activities. By providing a formal framework for sharing information and experience, The AFP is strengthening existing programs and, where appropriate, initiating new activities. The AFP collaborates with national, bilateral, multilateral and regional initiatives.

The egalitarian, voluntary and open nature of the partnership encourages collaboration between a wide variety of partners with differing interests and perspectives.

Partners to the AFP include governments, intergovernmental organizations and members of civil society, with all partners
equally accountable. Although leading partners have made a stronger commitment to the advancement of the partnership, they do not have greater authority than other partners.
