5. CLOSING ITEMS
Summary of the day - provided by Wil de Jong.
Next meeting of AFP.
Tokiharu Okazaki
To ensure participation of NGOs, cost for travel should be considered.
For instance, Geneva is too far for NGOs to participate because of high cost
for travel. If there are no financial supports, many of NGOs cannot
participate and excluded from the meeting.
Patrick Durst
In April 2004, Asea Pacific Forestry Commission will meet in Fiji. That
would be at the level of Director Generals. FAO would be willing to help
make arrangements to make that happen.
Edwin Brown
AFP should have some activity to have some kind of side-event in
connection with the next FLEG (possibly in April??).
Yuji Imaizumi.
Some people from Japan will be present at the Fiji meeting. However, a
full partnership meeting would be too early. Next meeting should focus on
monitoring the ideas of the work plans proposed today. Possibly progress of
initiatives could be observed first, and based on that a next meeting could
be called for.
Byron Sigel (TNC)
It does make sense to have some kind of mid-term meeting some six months
from now. We should have something very concrete shortly, and should bring
that to the world some six months from now.
Bambang Murdiono.
Indonesia also sends people to Fiji, but by then there will not be too
much progress. Rather we could make use of the opportunity of the other
meetings to discuss different aspects of the AFP.
Edwin Brown
The communication should be organized through a single communicator. If
we have a good communicator there is less need to have a next meeting soon.
If not, the meeting needs to be held again soon, so everybody gets updated
about progress.
Takehi Toma
At least,
afp@cgiar.org is the e-mail address where all partners may announce
their focal point as well as opportunities for collaboration.
Chair person
It is most likely that there will be no central communicator. Each
proposal needs to have a clear focal point.
The logical choice of timing of the next full AFP meeting seems to be
just before the next ITTC meeting, December 2004. Supplementary meetings may
be held in the meantime. That could be at Fiji, or at the UNFF meeting in
Geneva.
