Presenters

Three workplans discussed

Compilation of data base on training resources

  • Based on workplan endorsed by AFP in 2003, but not yet implemented
  • Survey instrument prepared by Japan Forestry Agency
  • No large funding requirements anticipated
  • Compilation of inputs by AFP Information Sharing Secretariat

Compilation of data base on training resources--suggestions

  • Value of proposal confirmed
  • Avoid duplication; build on others data bases and directories
  • Focus only on training opportunities available regionally participants (not those limited to in-country)
  • Seek to reveal the lesser-known training opportunities
  • Complement with information on funding opportunities to support training
  • Japan Forestry Agency to consult with other partners and further develop approach for implementation
  • Don’t underestimate the amount of time and effort this work will require

Trends in forest ownership, tenure and institutional arrangements

Approach

  • Build upon work of Forest Trends and others in this area to develop better understanding of these critical issues
  • National data collection in coordination with FRA 2005
  • Deepen analysis with detailed country assessments and case studies (6-8 countries)
  • Assess implications of ownership and tenure in addressing poverty and the AFP priority areas
  • Identification of trends and implications
  • Workshops
  • Guidance to countries for successfully dealing with forest ownership and tenure issues

Trends in forest ownership, tenure and institutional arrangements

  • Overall support for the workplan
  • Financial support committed from FAO (lead) and TNC (case studies support)
  • Collaboration indicated from:
    • Tropenbos (new partnership initiative with WWF will have direct relevance)
    • IGES (relevant ongoing studies)
    • Japan (JICA data sets)
    • ITTO (information and support from projects and case studies)
  • Philippines and Vietnam indicated interest in conducting country case studies and willingness to provide relevant in-kind support

Trends in forest ownership, tenure and institutional arrangements

Next steps:

  • Further refine case study approach and outline
  • Identify countries for case studies
  • Develop workshop arrangements
  • Secure additional financial support

Follow up to “In Search of Excellence” initiative

  • Consider “In Search of Excellence” follow-up initiative to identify good examples of excellence in dealing with AFP priority areas (e.g. rehabilitation, fire mgmt.)
  • Consider using ISOE sites for training
  • Suggestion to track ISOE sites over time
  • FAO to consider developing a full workplan for consideration in the future
