Report Working Group “Forest Fire”

Slide 1:

  • Forest (and Land) Fire issues are important and still relevant.
  • There is high demand on data and information. On the other hand, however, these are already available in many formats (database, etc.) managed by various organisations, forums, and networks.
  • The use of AFP information-sharing secretariat has to be optimalised. Partners to be more active in providing information. Secretariat to promote information more.
  • It was agreed that focus needs to be on local level as well operationally as with regards to information dissemination.

Slide 2

  • Noted that interest in forest fires is vanishing whenever there are no fires or have not been for a long time. From a fund raising point of view as well it is difficult to raise money for prevention, easier to raise money for deforestation.
  • Some interesting suggestions for areas of work, but working group has come to the conclusion that it is premature to elaborate a work plan at this stage.
  • Even if we do not have any active work plans on fire at the moment it is very important to maintain interest. Preventing fires is cheaper than fighting fires, which means that forest have continuously managed to prevent fire outbreaks. This also means that we have to maintain fire high on the agenda and keep interest up, even if we do not have any active work plans at the moment.
